We have two main functions here at the Writing Center. First is obviously to help any student with any writing assignment whether it is an essay, research paper, speech outline, resume, or scholarship application. Our tutors try to help the student understand the assignment, organize and format it correctly, cite sources accurately in the recommended style, and develop proofreading and editing skills.
The second purpose of our Writing Center is rather unique. We run mandatory labs for all students enrolled in a Basic Writing or Developmental Writing course. These students must attend a regularly scheduled lab once a week throughout the semester. We are here to help them with homework assignments, grammar problems, and basic paragraph and essay organization. We try to help clarify and reiterate concepts discussed in their classes.
The Writing Center is currently run by a staff of six Certified Tutors, all of whom have either undergraduate or graduate degrees, teaching certification, and/or numerous years of classroom teaching experience. During some semesters, student tutors are also a part of the tutoring staff.
